Anthropic reports Claude leads 26% of its AI R&D under human supervision

Anthropic published a prototype automation index estimating that Claude led 26% of its AI R&D in August. No measured work category was fully autonomous. Ratings rely on Claude judges and a fixed task inventory; cross-lab comparisons lack a common methodology.

The published methodology gives AI teams a template for tracking task automation, monitoring coverage, review latency and escalation rates.

Study finds atmospheric desert dust fell about 10% from 2003 to 2023

A UCLA study in Science Advances combined satellite observations, ground measurements and atmospheric models to estimate the decline. Reduced dust cooling may have modestly contributed to recent warming, but the causes of the decline remain unclear.

The measured trend provides a baseline for investigating how changing surface winds and other environmental factors affect atmospheric dust.

FLEX and Sentinel-3C reach orbit on a shared Vega-C launch

ESA confirmed deployment and ground contact for both satellites after flight VV30. FLEX will measure vegetation fluorescence, while Sentinel-3C will continue environmental monitoring. Spacecraft and instruments still require commissioning before routine operations.

Once operational, FLEX observations paired with Sentinel-3 data will support assessments of plant health, photosynthesis and environmental stress.
