    Anthropic releases Claude Sonnet 5.5

The model is available through the Claude Platform, AWS, Google Cloud and Azure. Pricing remains $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens. Anthropic reports faster generation; higher-risk cybersecurity requests fall back to Sonnet 5.

API integrations that disable thinking must switch to the between_tools setting before migrating to Sonnet 5.5.

Elastic rods power a small robot's hopping and swimming

UCLA and Michigan researchers demonstrated an 11-centimeter prototype that stores motor energy in twisted rods and releases it through snapping. It outpaced a rigid-legged comparison robot across six tested surfaces and swam when fitted with flexible fins.

The tested mechanism lets small motors produce bursts of motion, offering a design approach for robots constrained by motor output.

CHIME detects distant hydrogen using its own data

Researchers detected hydrogen emission from when the universe was about five billion years old without cross-correlating CHIME observations with external galaxy surveys. The result uses 94 nights of data collected in 2019; analysis of the larger archive remains underway.

The measurement provides an independent way to study hydrogen distribution and galaxy evolution, supporting future tests of cosmic expansion.
